WORKING FAMILIES PARTY RUNS CANDIDATES IN DELAWARE FOR THE FIRST TIME
DE WFP had six candidates on the ballot this election cycle. Three won [Stewart, Williams, Oberlie, and three lost, Semper, LoFink, Spence.] We received over 2000 votes for Stewart statewide, and while we were not the margin, the WFP was a major factor in Dennis Williams' victory, putting over 50 campaign workers in the field for him on election day, who worked the polls and doors for Dennis, on both the D and WFP line. From the outside these numbers might not look like anything special, but based on the WFP's experience they are quite remarkable. Consider:
1. In NYS first time out, with someone on the top of the ticket, and voters used to fusion, the NY WFP in 1998 got less than 1%
2. The Obama/Biden tsunami, while great for our side in general meant fewer ticket splitters and more folks voted straight D or R.
3 The WFP had lousy ballot position, column 9 and was hard to find.
4 There were no resources to do work prior to Nov. 4th. We believe that if the resources were there two weeks out to canvass in Spence"s and LoFink's districts they both might have won. So considering all this we are pleased and encouraged by the results.
In addition, as a result of the work, the WFP's relationships with unions, community groups, individual voters and electeds broadened and deepened on Tuesday Nov. 4th making the ability to move forward that muchbetter.
